The My Choice Difference
Propane equipment deserves more than a basic equipment check
A propane heating system depends on several parts working together. Fuel delivery, combustion, heat transfer, electrical controls, blower operation, ductwork and venting can all influence system performance.
A problem in one area can sometimes appear as a completely different heating complaint.
The Confidence Report™ helps connect individual findings to the overall condition of the heating system, giving homeowners a clearer basis for deciding what deserves attention.

Is Your Propane Heating System Performing Properly?
Changes in operation can provide useful clues
Propane heating problems do not always begin with a complete loss of heat. Changes in how the system starts, runs or distributes heat can provide an early reason for evaluation.
Uneven temperatures
Rooms that remain colder than others may indicate airflow, duct distribution, equipment performance or system-design concerns.
Unusual furnace sounds
New rattling, buzzing, clicking or other unusual sounds can indicate a change in component operation.
Frequent cycling
Repeated starts and stops may be related to airflow, controls, system capacity or other operating conditions.
Weak airflow
Reduced airflow can affect comfort and heating performance and may involve filtration, blower operation, ductwork or static pressure.
Longer heating cycles
A propane furnace that takes noticeably longer to heat the home may be experiencing a change in system performance or heat distribution.
Changes in operation
A different startup, shutdown, burner behavior or overall heating pattern can be a reason to have the system professionally evaluated.
Propane Heating Systems
Fuel is only one part of how your home is heated
A propane system needs proper combustion and heat transfer, but the generated heat must also be distributed effectively throughout the home.
Depending on the system and the reason for service, evaluation may involve heating equipment, airflow, blower operation, controls, electrical components, combustion-related operation, ductwork and overall system performance.
The objective is to understand how the complete system is operating and identify issues that genuinely deserve attention.
Evaluate the existing system
Understand its condition, performance, repair history, and the reason replacement is being considered.
Repair, Maintain or Replace?
A propane system problem does not automatically mean replacement
A failed component, performance concern or operating change does not by itself determine the future of the entire heating system.
Documented findings can help you look at the condition of the equipment as a whole and make a decision based on facts.
Identify the issue
Understand what changed, where the problem is occurring, and how it affects system operation.
Consider the condition
Look at equipment condition, performance, repair history and the rest of the heating system—not just the failed component.
Plan ahead
If repairs or improvements are needed, identifying them before a major breakdown gives you more time to evaluate your options.
Decide when the facts are clear
You remain in control of whether to repair the propane system, continue monitoring it, improve its performance or consider replacement.
Propane Systems & System Performance
Proper combustion and airflow work together
Propane heating performance depends on the relationship between the heating equipment and the home’s air-distribution system.
My Choice’s technical capabilities include:
Manual J Load Calculations
Performance Testing
Air Balancing
These capabilities allow propane heating concerns to be evaluated in the context of the complete system rather than focusing on one component without considering the rest of the equipment and home.
Catch Problems Before Breakdowns
Early information can give you more time to make a decision
One evaluation provides a snapshot of the system at that specific point in time, showing how it is operating under current conditions. However, continued attention to system condition over time can make changes in performance, recurring issues, and gradual component wear much easier to recognize before they develop into larger problems.
The Confidence Report™ approach documents relevant findings in a clear and structured way so you can better understand whether a concern is new, recurring, or becoming more significant over time. It also helps connect individual observations into a broader pattern, making it easier to see how the system is trending rather than relying on a single inspection result.
That information can be especially useful when deciding whether a propane system should be repaired, monitored more closely, improved for better efficiency and safety, or eventually replaced if the condition suggests ongoing risk or declining performance.
Propane heating is also about information
Knowing that your system is operating properly provides confidence during the heating season. Knowing that a component or operating condition is beginning to change gives you time to understand the issue and consider your options before it becomes an unexpected heating emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about propane systems.
How often should a propane heating system be inspected?
A propane heating system should generally receive professional inspection and maintenance at least once a year, preferably before the heating season. An inspection can evaluate equipment operation, combustion-related conditions, venting, electrical components, airflow and other factors that can affect safe and reliable heating. Annual professional inspection is also recommended by the Ohio Propane Gas Association.
What is the difference between a propane furnace and a natural gas furnace?
Both systems use combustion to produce heat, but propane and natural gas have different fuel characteristics and operating requirements. A furnace designed for natural gas may require the appropriate manufacturer-approved conversion components and setup before operating on liquid propane. The fuel type, gas pressure, burner configuration and installation requirements must all be correct for the equipment.
How do I know if my propane heating system needs service?
Changes in system operation can be useful warning signs. Uneven heating, frequent cycling, longer heating times, weak airflow, unusual sounds, burner changes or recurring startup problems can indicate that the system needs evaluation. Yellow flames, soot or unusual combustion-related odors can also indicate improper operation and should be professionally investigated.
What should I do if I smell propane in my home?
Treat the smell of propane as a potential gas leak. Do not create flames or sparks and do not operate electrical switches, appliances or phones in the suspected area. Leave the building, shut off the propane supply only if it is safe to do so, and contact your propane retailer or emergency services from a safe location. Do not return until qualified personnel determine that the area is safe.
Can a propane furnace produce carbon monoxide?
Yes. Like other fuel-burning heating equipment, a propane furnace can produce carbon monoxide when combustion or venting is not operating properly. Blocked vents, improper combustion or other equipment problems can increase the risk. Professional inspection of the appliance and venting, along with properly installed carbon monoxide detectors, can provide important safety protection.
Why is venting important for a propane heating system?
Venting carries combustion products from the heating appliance to the outdoors. A blocked, damaged or improperly installed vent can interfere with the safe removal of combustion gases. Ohio requirements generally require fuel-burning appliances used in occupied spaces to have properly designed, installed and maintained venting to the outdoors, subject to specific exceptions.
What happens if my propane tank runs out during winter?
Running completely out of propane can create additional safety and service concerns. Appliance pilot lights may go out, and air or moisture can enter a depleted tank. After the supply is restored, the system may require a leak check before appliances are placed back into service. Keeping track of the tank gauge and arranging delivery before the level becomes critically low can help avoid this situation.
Why does my propane furnace keep shutting off or cycling on and off?
Frequent cycling can have several possible causes, including restricted airflow, thermostat or control problems, equipment capacity, combustion-related conditions or other system-performance issues. It is better to identify the reason than simply reset the furnace repeatedly. A professional evaluation can determine whether the problem originates with the equipment, airflow or another part of the heating system.
Can a propane heating system be made more efficient?
Potentially, but efficiency depends on the equipment and the complete heating system. Furnace efficiency, airflow, duct distribution, static pressure, system sizing and combustion performance can all influence how effectively heat is delivered. Evaluating these factors can help determine whether the appropriate improvement is a repair, airflow correction, system improvement or eventually a higher-efficiency replacement. Propane furnaces are available across a range of efficiency levels, including high-efficiency models.
Should I repair my propane furnace or replace the entire system?
A single repair does not automatically mean the propane furnace needs to be replaced. The better decision depends on the age and condition of the equipment, repair history, operating performance, efficiency, comfort concerns and the condition of the overall heating system. Documented findings can help you compare the value of repairing the existing system with the longer-term benefits of replacement.
What areas do you serve for heating maintenance?
