From A Small Village To A Connected Community
Westerville’s early development centered around the village that grew near what is now Uptown. The community was platted by the mid-1850s, and the Westervelt family’s connection to Otterbein University helped establish the area as an important educational and civic center.
Westerville incorporated as a village in 1858, with John Haywood serving as its first mayor. Schools, local businesses, churches, and community services continued developing as the population grew around the central village.
Transportation brought another major change in the late 19th century. The railroad reached Westerville in 1873, supporting mills and local commerce, while State Street remained an important route through the community and the foundation of today’s Uptown district.
Today, Westerville combines historic Uptown properties with established neighborhoods, larger residential homes, and newer construction. With I-270 forming much of the southern edge and I-71 providing access along the western side, the city has continued to grow while retaining a recognizable historic core.
