Gahanna's History Still Shapes The City
Gahanna’s story began in 1849 when John Clark established his property along the eastern side of Big Walnut Creek. He called the property Gahanna Plantation, giving the community the name it carries today. The name refers to the idea of three creeks joining into one, reflected in the city’s official “Three In One” seal.
A second community developed just across Granville Street. Bridgeport was founded in 1853 by Jesse Baughman, creating a rivalry between the two settlements along Big Walnut Creek. Eventually, the communities put that rivalry aside and merged, keeping the Gahanna name because another Bridgeport already existed in Ohio.
Gahanna continued developing as a local community before formally incorporating as a village in 1881. Fifty-five residents petitioned Franklin County for incorporation, and the village held its first mayoral election later that year.
Modern Gahanna extends well beyond its original creekside settlement. The city now includes the Creekside District, established residential neighborhoods, newer housing, commercial areas, and hundreds of acres of parkland. Its location near Columbus and major highways also connects Gahanna homes to the wider Central Ohio region.
