From Smithville To Modern Blacklick
Blacklick’s roots go back to 1852, when William A. Smith laid out a community called Smithville in Jefferson Township. Because another Ohio community already carried that name, the settlement was renamed Blacklick after the nearby creek.
The community developed around practical local needs. Historical records describe mills, a post office, churches, businesses, and other services that helped Blacklick serve the surrounding agricultural area. Blacklick Creek also became an important geographic feature of the community.
Blacklick’s location continued to give it importance as the surrounding region developed. Today, the community remains part of Jefferson Township in Franklin County and sits within the larger Columbus metropolitan area, with established properties and newer residential development sharing the same area.
