West Jefferson started out as New Hampton, platted in 1822 along Little Darby Creek. When the National Road — one of the country’s first major federal highways — was routed about a quarter mile north in the early 1830s, the town didn’t get left behind: residents moved their houses and barns onto the new road on rollers, and Reverend Isaac Jones platted the relocated town as Jefferson, later renamed West Jefferson to avoid confusion with other Ohio towns of the same name.

The village boomed as a stagecoach stop, with five hotels at its peak serving travelers on the road now known as U.S. Route 40.
That same instinct — build where the road is — still shapes the town today. Park 70, the commerce park near the interstate, has brought newer industrial and residential growth alongside the historic homes along the original road corridor.
