From Hilliard's Station To A Growing Community
John Reed Hilliard purchased 10 acres of farmland in western Franklin County in 1852. The area grew around the Piqua and Indiana Railroad, and the original town was platted in 1853 as Hilliard’s Station. The railroad made the community an important shipping point for agricultural products and supplies before the name was shortened to Hilliard in 1854.
Hilliard was incorporated as a village in 1869 and became an official city in 1960. Residential development expanded significantly in the 1950s, while the construction of I-270 brought another major period of growth and helped transform Hilliard into a Columbus-area suburb.
Today, Old Hilliard preserves the community’s original character around Main Street, the restored train station, Weaver Park, and the beginning of the Heritage Rail Trail. At the same time, newer residential and commercial areas continue to grow around corridors such as Cemetery Road and I-270.
